Two-stage study contract for the extension and renovation of the Bruderholz Cantonal Hospital.
The Kantonsspital Bruderholz in its current form was built over 40 years ago, and at the time was designed as a modern hospital for stationary patients. Yet hospital and medical care have changed considerably over time, and the functionality and organization of the hospital no longer reflect the requirements of today’s medical community. The maximum lifespan of the exterior facade and mechanical systems have been reached as well, making the enlargement and complete renovation of the facilities unavoidable.
Attached orthogonally to a multi-story building containing general-use and infrastructure functions and located adjacent to the entrance hall, two new high-rise towers housing patient rooms and specialty centers for geriatrics and rehabilitation are planned to serve both Basel communities. The towers are a landmark visible from nearly every location in Basel. The south facing meadow between the towers and edge of forest together with the entrance hall will become a new central location. Multi-dimensional and layered elements divide and help to define the open space of the meadow as it flows into the entrance hall. The entire new addition is designed to be built in a way that allows construction without the need of temporary structures or creating any operational disturbances for the hospital. Blaser Architekten participated in this two part design study in cooperation with Rapp Arcoplan and the architectural office Steinmann&Schmid.
