Consumption shapes life, space and the city

ReCity deals with the interaction between consumer behaviour and urban living space.

ReDesign
The French design studio Faltazi develops ecologically orientated product series for industry and society. As operational designers, they also develop process systems as the basis for new product concepts. Their Ekokook project, an ecological concept kitchen that focuses on energy-saving materialisation on the one hand and proposes innovative ways of recycling waste on the other, also falls into the first discipline. A further development of the vision into the urban space led to the Les Ekovores project, which aims to develop a model system of agricultural production, processing and distribution units in the urban space.

ReFarm
Urban farming, or urban agriculture, has experienced an enormous boom in recent years. On the one hand, it is a revival of old traditions of self-sufficiency and, on the other, a growing need to identify with the urban living environment in the light of globalisation. The means are diverse, mostly socio-politically or ecologically motivated and are sometimes realised in a classic or technologically sophisticated way. UrbanFarmers is a spin-off company of the ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences) in Wädenswil. As a clean tech start-up with the goals of planet, people and profit, they endeavour to reconcile ecological sustainability, social capital and economic success.

ReWater
Water is home, water is cycle, water is economy, water is energy, water is space, water is finiteness, water is responsibility, water is a fundamental right. By interweaving scientific findings with practical action, Atelier Dreiseitl is constantly giving new impetus to the management of rainwater in urban areas and passing it on in teaching assignments, committee work, lectures, interdisciplinary planning groups and numerous publications.

ReBuild
The Swiss building stock represents a material weight of around 2,090 million tonnes, with building construction accounting for around two thirds (1,400 million tonnes). In relation to Switzerland's resident population, this results in a total weight of 304 tonnes per inhabitant for the Swiss building stock. The materials comprise a volume of 1,190 million cubic metres. The amount of construction waste generated in Switzerland each year is estimated at around 11 million tonnes. This corresponds to a per capita waste volume of almost 1.4 tonnes per year, a huge potential of destroyed reusable building materials. A direct form of recycling in the construction industry is the reutilisation of individual components. They are dismantled in the demolition sites, then processed and stored until they can be reused. The in situ construction office in Basel, headed by Barbara Buser, works closely with the Bauteilbörse.
