For thirty years, Blaser Architekten has been offering all services in the fields of space, architecture and general planning. We are active in all building typologies, as well as in different project sizes and mandate forms. Thanks to our experience, knowledge and activity in the field of construction, we are aware of our responsibility for economic, energy and social sustainability.
We pursue our endeavours in sustainability with the following attitude and actions:
Economy Property represents the greatest economic value in the world. With our work as architects and the high monetary turnover associated with it, we form the interface between the financiers and the companies and suppliers. The economic use of funds, for example, determines purchase prices and flat rents. All our projects pursue an economic use of funds in order to create and operate sustainable space. We act and operate independently in economic terms. We have achieved and managed our entire growth and infrastructure from our own resources without loans.
Energy and environment Building and space management account for around a third of the resources consumed on planet Earth. We therefore endeavour to optimise our own premises, as well as those that we plan and build, in order to cause as little damage as possible to the environment and nature, and we have equipped the entire roof of our office with a PV system. To supplement the heating, we use a wood-burning stove with wood from our own wood production. Our office is naturally ventilated and cooled, and when selecting the locations of our mandates, we pay attention to the geographical proximity to our architectural office. We get around the city by bike and e-bike, and our next car will be electric. Since the pandemic, we have done without all unnecessary printouts.
Sustainability has also found its way into our projects. The question of sensible consumption comes first. In the design and planning process, we incorporate the reuse of building components (circular construction), a sustainable choice of materials as well as efficiency, consistency and sufficiency wherever possible. In our planning, we pay particular attention to the issues of energy, water and wastewater, emissions, waste and mobility, as well as the smart operation of our buildings. We have a central office for sustainability development to acquire, disseminate and apply the necessary knowledge.
Society and social affairs As a company with forty employees, we are committed to social sustainability as an employer. We have always aimed for a high proportion of women, train apprentices to become draughtsmen and women specialising in architecture and offer internships for prospective architects. Equal opportunities, generational diversity and a good work-life balance are important to us. We have already offered many people the opportunity to return to work. Training and further education, equal opportunities and a flat hierarchy are anchored in our DNA and will remain so.

… How Glazing Systems Sustainably Brighten Spaces In our projects, the use and integration of light always play a central role. Whether in offices, laboratories, or residential spaces, daylight is a crucial factor in both new construction and renovation projects. And for good reason—flooded with natural light, rooms not only create a pleasant atmosphere and a sense of spaciousness but also significantly impact energy efficiency and indoor climate. Last but not least, light and air have been proven to influence human psychology. In the following, we take a closer look at the key aspects of daylight planning from an architectural perspective and how the right glazing systems can enhance daylight supply in interior spaces.
The topic of green roofs and biodiversity conservation in inner cities has gained increasing importance in recent years and is becoming a key component of sustainable urban planning. As an architectural practice, we regularly engage with this subject, for example through our work on the Stücki Park project on Hochbergstrasse. This provides good reason to take a closer look. In line with our credo “sharing experience,” we aim to gain deeper insights into why urban greening and bird conservation are so important and what role Basel plays in this context. We spoke with two experts on the subject. In the second part of the interview, we exchanged views with Dr. phil. Monika Schaub from the Department of Building Applications, Trees, and Plant Protection.

And yet, our analogue architecture library possesses a unique power of its own. As a tactile archive of architectural history and a source of inspiration for future thinking, it remains a constant presence in our studio – sometimes used more, sometimes less, but always accessible.
Our new blog format REVISITED takes a retrospective look at completed projects, offering an assessment of architecture as it is lived over time. We begin with a single-family home in Witterswil, completed in 2012. Situated at the edge of the building zone, the one-storey residence was realised as a densification of an existing plot and includes, in addition to the customary living areas, a slightly recessed studio space. The house was originally occupied by a couple to whom we have returned for a visit 13 years after their move-in.
What actually is... amock-up?Sketches, drawings,floor plans, 3D models - the language used by architectural designers tocommunicate visually is not always easy to understand right away in reality -after all, visualizations often only offer a perspective view and plans, gridsand the like must also be able to be read. And even if digitalization has longsince found its way into the field of construction (planning) and architecture,the implementation of a project and the end result is still a highly analoguematter that involves sensory perception. So what helps to illustrate ideas andpossible projects in the best possible way and to give clients, but also thecontractors, tradespeople and suppliers involved, a comprehensive picture ofwhat the future could look like? Exactly, a mock-up, i.e. a modelrepresentation on a scale of 1:1. The term mock-up has its origins in French(maquette) and means something like preliminary model, sketch or draft.
