The tri-national EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse is to receive a direct rail connection for passengers from France, Switzerland and Germany in the coming years. The access and car parking situations are also to be improved. The study is also intended to highlight the future potential of the outdoor space and the development of the EAP.
Blaser Architekten, together with a competent team of specialist planners, developed a proposal for the future design of the airport area. The tracks and platforms of the new railway are to be so low that they can be completely covered by a new level. It will serve as a platform for all arrivals and departures and will also function as a multimodal platform (public transport, drop-off, short-stay parking, taxis, shuttles, rent-a-car). The roof reflects the passengers' movements and adapts to the functional requirements. The result is an organic form that creates an exciting interplay of light and shadow, of views and vistas. Playing on the platform with elements from the public space creates a new place for encounters and communication. The current borderline is symbolised by a pool of water that separates the two countries according to the current global situation without actually drawing a border.
